For some it was the first time they had struck a warrior pose or stretched into a downward dog, but the 500 people gathered at WA’s prestigious new venue – Optus Stadium on Saturday gave it their best shot in order to raise funds for delivering Fair Game’s health and fitness programs and recycled sports equipment to remote and under-serviced communities around WA.
The crowd were entertained as they gathered on the grass, by local Aboriginal artists, Lee West on the didgeridoo and singing and West Australian Music Indigenous artist of the year 2018 nominee – Natasha Eldridge, before being guided through a fun session of Flow yoga by four of Perth’s favourite yoga teachers: Kylie Pearsall, Adam Rose, Shawn Taylor and Claudia Scalisi.
“We are thrilled to have such a great turnout” said CEO Nicki Bardwell. “It has been such an incredible atmosphere here today and the money raised will help us make healthy lifestyle choices accessible to some of WA’s most remote communities.”
“The event was named after our unique Indigenous yoga program, The Wellness Walkabout, that has proved very popular with kids in the communities we work in, so it was lovely to have the Perth community find a bit of Zen while raising money to support this initiative.”
Fair Game is a WA based charity started in 2010 which works throughout the State in some of its most remote communities in across the Kimberley, Pilbara, Midwest and Wheatbelt regions, as well as in under-serviced communities in the Perth Metro area. Fair Game’s unique programs use sport and fitness to educate and inspire children to stay active and look after their bodies. Programs are designed by healthcare professionals and aim to reduce incidence of preventable and communicable disease, build social cohesion and improve mental wellbeing.
